The Cayuse War was an armed conflict that took place in the Northwestern United States from 1847 to 1855 between the Cayuse people of the region and the United States Government and local American settlers. Caused in part by the influx of disease and settlers to the region, the immediate start of the conflict occurred in 1847 when the Whitman Massacre took place at the Whitman Mission near present-day Walla Walla, Washington when fourteen people were killed in and around the mission. Over the next few years the Provisional Government of Oregon and later the United States Army battled the Native Americans east of the Cascades. Za příčinu se kromě jiného považuje šíření nemocí po příchodu evropských osadníků. Válku vyvolal v r. 1847 kmen Kajusů, když zmasakroval Marcuse Whitmana a jeho rodinu na misii Waiilatpu. V dalších letech bojovala nejprve prozatímní vláda Oregonu a později také americká armáda s indiány na východě Kaskádového pohoří. Tato válka je prvním z konfliktů mezi původními obyvateli a evropskými osadníky. Důsledkem války bylo přemístění indiánských kmenů do indiánských rezervací. Er dauerte von 1847 bzw. 1848 bis 1855. Auslöser war das Whitman-Massaker in der nahe beim Ort Walla Walla im Osten des heutigen Bundesstaats Washington. Dabei wurden 14 Menschen getötet. Die tieferen Ursachen lagen im Zustrom weißer Siedler, die glaubten, das in ihren Augen ungenutzte Land nach und nach an sich nehmen zu können, sowie in Epidemien, die die Siedler einschleppten, allen voran die Masern. Dabei betrachtete die Regierung die Cayuse formal nie als Kriegsgegner, und so kam es zu Hinrichtungen wegen Gewaltverbrechen.
