  • Die Liste österreichischer Kinofilme soll eine chronologische und repräsentative Übersicht über das österreichische Filmschaffen (Spiel-, Dokumentar-, Trick- und Kurzfilme mit Kinostart oder Premiere an einem Filmfestival, ausgenommen Kurzfilmfestivals) seit Erfindung des Tonfilms darstellen. Österreichische Filme der Stummfilmära sind in der Liste österreichischer Stummfilme eingeordnet, Fernsehfilme und -sendungen finden sich in der Liste österreichischer Fernsehproduktionen. Anhaltspunkte für einen repräsentativen Kinofilm sind: mindestens 10.000 Kinobesuche in Österreich (oder in einem anderen Land), bedeutender Regisseur sowie bedeutende Schauspieler in Hauptrollen, internationale Festivalerfolge oder Auszeichnungen an bedeutenden österreichischen Filmfestivals wie Viennale und Diagonale sowie der Österreichische Filmpreis und von der Filmkritik besonders hervorgehobene Produktionen. Bei älteren Filmen, bei denen diese Kriterien mangels Überprüfbarkeit nicht angewendet werden können, sollen vor allem an der überlieferten Bedeutung (damalige Filmstars, damalige Kinoerfolge, besonders populäre Filme damals oder auch heute noch) und filmgeschichtlichen Bedeutung (zum Beispiel für ihre Zeit außergewöhnliche, möglicherweise eine Vorreiterrolle einnehmende Filme) gemessen werden.
