Siegfried Kurt Baschwitz (2 February 1886, Offenburg – 6 January 1968 Amsterdam), was a journalist, a professor of press, propaganda and public opinion, scholar on newspapers, and crowd psychology. Baschwitz, who, as was customary in German middle class, was known by his second name Kurt, was a German Jew and a friend of Otto Frank, the father of Anne Frank. Baschwitz was called upon as an expert to advise on the publication of the Diary of Anne Frank and later again authenticate it.

Baschwitz huwde in 1919 met Erna Thiessen, uit dit huwelijk werden drie kinderen geboren. Het paar scheidde in 1933, waarna Baschwitz in 1958 huwde met Ilse Scholz. In de jaren vijftig werd hij een centrale figuur in een nieuw opgerichte internationale vereniging voor "publicistiek" en haar congressen. Hij richtte het internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Gazette op, en speelde een sleutelrol bij de voorbereiding van de International Association of Mass Communication Research IAMCR - instellingen die nog steeds bestaan. Tegenwoordig is hij bekend als grondlegger van de in 1985 officieel erkende studierichting communicatiewetenschappen. In 2017 verscheen in Engels en Nederlands een uitvoerige monografie over zijn leven, werk, en tijd. (nl)
