Byl zastáncem teze, že skutečná literární teorie musí být vždy složena z různorodých prvků, především strukturalismu, kulturálních studií, hermeneutiky, filozofie jazyka, antropologie, marxismu, psychoanalýzy, sémiotiky a literární kritiky. Věřil, že důležitějším předmětem studia než text samý jsou mechanismy interpretace textu.
