"Los anillos de Saturno son un sistema de 10 anillos planetarios que rodean a ese planeta y fueron observados por primera vez en julio de 1610 por Galileo Galilei. En parte porque las im\u00E1genes que daba el reci\u00E9n inventado telescopio eran de mala calidad para aquel entonces, y en parte porque hac\u00EDa solo unos meses que hab\u00EDa descubierto los cuatro mayores sat\u00E9lites de J\u00FApiter, pens\u00F3 inicialmente que las estructuras borrosas, parecidas a orejas, que hab\u00EDa visto, eran dos sat\u00E9lites pr\u00F3ximos a Saturno. Pronto cambi\u00F3 de opini\u00F3n. Aquellos \"extra\u00F1os ap\u00E9ndices\" no variaban su posici\u00F3n respecto a Saturno de una noche a la siguiente y, adem\u00E1s, desaparecieron en 1612. Sucedi\u00F3 que los anillos, compuestos por hidr\u00F3geno, helio y sulfuro, hab\u00EDan quedado orientados con su plano seg\u00FAn la visual desde la Tierra en 1612 y con ello se hab\u00EDan hecho muy d\u00E9biles. La geometr\u00EDa de los ap\u00E9ndices dej\u00F3 perplejos a los astr\u00F3nomos, hasta el punto de llegarse a proponer que se trataba de asas unidas a Saturno o que constaban de varios sat\u00E9lites en \u00F3rbita solamente alrededor de la parte posterior de Saturno, por lo que nunca arrojaban sombra sobre el planeta. Finalmente, en 1655, Christiaan Huygens sugiri\u00F3 que los ap\u00E9ndices eran el signo visible de un disco de materia delgado y plano, separado del planeta y dispuesto en el plano ecuatorial de este. Dependiendo de cu\u00E1les fueran las posiciones de Saturno y de la Tierra en sus respectivas \u00F3rbitas alrededor del Sol, la inclinaci\u00F3n del disco respecto a la Tierra variar\u00EDa; de ah\u00ED que su apariencia variase tambi\u00E9n desde la de una delgada l\u00EDnea hasta la de una ancha elipse. El ciclo de los anillos al igual que la \u00F3rbita del planeta Saturno duraba 29 a\u00F1os. Durante los dos siglos siguientes se supuso que el disco era una capa continua de materia. La primera objeci\u00F3n contra la hip\u00F3tesis no tardar\u00EDa, sin embargo, en plantearse. En 1675, Giovanni Cassini hall\u00F3 una oscura banda (la divisi\u00F3n que lleva su nombre) que separaba el disco en dos anillos conc\u00E9ntricos. A finales del siglo XVIII, Pierre-Simon Laplace mostr\u00F3 que bastar\u00EDan las fuerzas combinadas de la gravedad en el planeta Saturno y la rotaci\u00F3n del disco para desgarrar una capa \u00FAnica de materia. En principio, cualquier part\u00EDcula del disco mantiene su distancia radial desde Saturno porque hay dos fuerzas que se equilibran. La gravedad tira de la part\u00EDcula hacia dentro; la fuerza centr\u00EDfuga la empuja hacia fuera. La fuerza centr\u00EDfuga procede de la velocidad de rotaci\u00F3n; de aqu\u00ED que el disco haya de estar girando. Ahora bien, en el caso de un disco en rotaci\u00F3n r\u00EDgida, las fuerzas se equilibran solamente para una cierta distancia radial. Por ello, Laplace propuso la hip\u00F3tesis de que los anillos de Saturno estaban formados por muchos anillos delgados, lo suficiente cada uno de ellos para soportar el ligero desequilibrio de fuerzas que aparecer\u00EDa a lo largo de su anchura radial. El \u00FAltimo paso hacia la visi\u00F3n moderna de los anillos se dio en 1857, cuando James Clerk Maxwell gan\u00F3 el Premio Adams de la Universidad de Cambridge por su demostraci\u00F3n matem\u00E1tica de que los anillos delgados estaban formados en realidad por numerosas masas peque\u00F1as que manten\u00EDan \u00F3rbitas independientes. La comprobaci\u00F3n experimental de esta hip\u00F3tesis lleg\u00F3 en 1895, cuando los astr\u00F3nomos estadounidenses James Edward Keeler y William W. Campbell dedujeron la velocidad de las part\u00EDculas en los anillos a partir de su desplazamiento Doppler, o modificaci\u00F3n de la longitud de onda de las l\u00EDneas espectrales de la luz del Sol que las part\u00EDculas reflejan hacia la Tierra. Encontraron que los anillos giraban alrededor de Saturno a una velocidad distinta de la de la atm\u00F3sfera del planeta.
