Foi nesse contexto que surgiram as primeiras pesquisas para a cria\u00E7\u00E3o de ve\u00EDculos movidos a eletricidade, gerada por c\u00E9lulas combust\u00EDveis abastecidas por hidrog\u00EAnio, ainda na d\u00E9cada de 1980. No mundo, cerca de 20% da emiss\u00E3o de CO\u2082 s\u00E3o causadas pelo sistema de transportes, al\u00E9m da participa\u00E7\u00E3o deste para o efeito estufa e emiss\u00E3o de outros poluentes. J\u00E1 no Brasil, segundo o Minist\u00E9rio da Ci\u00EAncia e Tecnologia (MCT), a emiss\u00E3o \u00E9 cerca de 9% do total. Sendo este um n\u00FAmero substancial, tanto a n\u00EDvel mundial, quanto a nacional, a busca de alternativas \u00E9 o planejamento para o que precisa ser o futuro. O Brasil possui a maior frota de \u00F4nibus do mundo. Apenas esse tipo de transporte responde a mais de 60% dos deslocamentos urbanos, enquanto os carros ficam com menos de 30% de participa\u00E7\u00E3o. Entretanto, o \u00F4nibus emite apenas 7% dos gases poluentes, enquanto os carros contribuem com cerca de 50%. Esses dados, em uni\u00E3o com os dados da participa\u00E7\u00E3o dos sistemas de transportes na polui\u00E7\u00E3o, justificam as pesquisas nacionais brasileiras na cria\u00E7\u00E3o de \u00F4nibus movidos a hidrog\u00EAnio. Para fazer o \u00F4nibus a hidrog\u00EAnio funcionar, \u00E9 necess\u00E1rio produzir o hidrog\u00EAnio a partir da eletr\u00F3lise, que normalmente \u00E9 feita da \u00E1gua. A seguir, \u00E9 colocado o combust\u00EDvel em uma c\u00E9lula, juntamente com o oxig\u00EAnio, o comburente, onde ocorrem rea\u00E7\u00F5es eletroqu\u00EDmicas. Os primeiros testes com esse tipo de \u00F4nibus foram feitos na Europa, em 2004.
