Toutefois, les projets d'\u00E9nergie renouvelable, comme le d\u00E9boisement pour la production de biocarburants, ou encore l'extraction et le raffinage des m\u00E9taux n\u00E9cessaires \u00E0 l'\u00E9nergie \u00E9olienne ou \u00E0 l'\u00E9nergie solaire, peuvent causer de graves dommages environnementaux. L'\u00E9nergie nucl\u00E9aire est une source \u00E0 faible \u00E9mission de carbone et son bilan de s\u00E9curit\u00E9 est comparable \u00E0 celui de l'\u00E9nergie \u00E9olienne et solaire, mais sa durabilit\u00E9 fait l'objet de d\u00E9bats en raison des pr\u00E9occupations li\u00E9es \u00E0 la prolif\u00E9ration nucl\u00E9aire, aux d\u00E9chets nucl\u00E9aires et aux accidents. Le passage du charbon au gaz naturel pr\u00E9sente des avantages pour l'environnement, mais retarde le passage \u00E0 des options plus durables. La transition \u00E9nerg\u00E9tique visant \u00E0 r\u00E9pondre de mani\u00E8re durable aux besoins mondiaux en \u00E9lectricit\u00E9, en chauffage, en refroidissement et en transport est l'un des plus grands d\u00E9fis auxquels l'humanit\u00E9 est confront\u00E9e au XXIe si\u00E8cle. La production et la consommation d'\u00E9nergie sont responsables de plus de 70 % des \u00E9missions de gaz \u00E0 effet de serre qui provoquent le changement climatique, la p\u00E9nurie d'eau et la perte de la biodiversit\u00E9, et peuvent g\u00E9n\u00E9rer des d\u00E9chets toxiques.
