O clima tropical, \u00FAmido, com temperaturas amenas fez com que n\u00E3o houvesse a necessidade de materiais mais elaborados. Antes da chegada europeia no territ\u00F3rio brasileiro, havia em torno de 5 milh\u00F5es de nativos, estando divididos em comunidades ao longo da regi\u00E3o brasileira. Contando com mais de 220 etnias, atualmente, o pa\u00EDs soma mais de 454 mil \u00EDndios. O modo de viver ind\u00EDgena \u00E9 baseado em ocas e malocas, com certas peculiaridades entre algumas etnias, mas sendo seus sistemas construtivos bem parecidos. A forma mais simples das habita\u00E7\u00F5es ind\u00EDgenas s\u00E3o as ocas, uma casa unifamiliar, que podem possuir v\u00E1rias delas em uma \u00FAnica aldeia. J\u00E1 a maloca \u00E9 a unidade multifamiliar que consiste em uma jun\u00E7\u00E3o das ocas, onde toda ou uma parte da comunidade vive nela. A tradi\u00E7\u00E3o construtiva singular n\u00E3o significa que seja a \u00FAnica solu\u00E7\u00E3o arquitet\u00F4nica. Entre as etnias h\u00E1 diferen\u00E7as na constru\u00E7\u00E3o do espa\u00E7o. As aldeias s\u00E3o formadas de modo bastante similar no territ\u00F3rio brasileiro. Primeiro uma pequena clareira \u00E9 aberta, e as \u00E1rvores de grande portes s\u00E3o cortadas para n\u00E3o ca\u00EDrem sobre as casas no futuro. Enquanto isso, a vegeta\u00E7\u00E3o natural come\u00E7a a cobrir o primeiro anel, dificultando a chegada aos mais externos. Do lado mais externo do c\u00EDrculo da aldeia, localiza-se a \u00E1rea destinada ao plantio. Quando o solo se exaure, um novo c\u00EDrculo externo \u00E9 preparado. Passados ao redor de doze anos, as hortas est\u00E3o ficam muito mais distantes e o anel original est\u00E1 mais denso, ent\u00E3o a aldeia \u00E9 abandonada. A forma\u00E7\u00E3o da aldeia pode tamb\u00E9m ser de forma externa, sendo circular, quadrada ou interna, com o centro de uma grande maloca. Sua organiza\u00E7\u00E3o s\u00F3cio-espacial \u00E9 formada por v\u00E1rias ocas, malocas ou um conjunto de malocas onde residem v\u00E1rias fam\u00EDlias, chegando a 400 pessoas, com suas varia\u00E7\u00F5es. A forma mais simples nas habita\u00E7\u00F5es ind\u00EDgenas s\u00E3o as ocas. \u00C9 importante ressaltar que tem um vi\u00E9s de generaliza\u00E7\u00E3o sobre os termos. Cada etnia possui seu pr\u00F3prio m\u00E9todo e modo de viver. As malocas s\u00E3o constru\u00E7\u00F5es distribu\u00EDdas ortogonalmente, formando uma grande pra\u00E7a central na qual atividades do cotidiano s\u00E3o realizadas, como festas, rituais sagrados e cerim\u00F4nias. \u00C9 dividida internamente pela estrutura do telhado em espa\u00E7os quadrados. As ocas s\u00E3o unifamiliares e cada comunidade tem sua diferen\u00E7a na quantidade, qualidade e tecnologia arquitet\u00F4nica na forma\u00E7\u00E3o de sua comunidade. Quando alguma etnia n\u00E3o faz o uso de malocas, as ocas s\u00E3o ocupadas ao redor de um territ\u00F3rio afim de formar uma pra\u00E7a central. A divis\u00E3o da maloca era por zonas clim\u00E1ticas e n\u00E3o de atividades, a atividade adequada era executada em locais com temperaturas naturalmente ou artificialmente adequadas.
