"Edward Richard McDonald (September 24, 1871 \u2013 February 16, 1952) was an adventurer, lawyer, politician, writer, inventor and family man. He had a long career of notable distinction as a lawyer spanning more than 50 years. He was one of the first people in the province of New Brunswick, and the first resident of Shediac, New Brunswick, to own and operate an automobile. He purchased his first vehicle in 1908, a sports model McLaughlin Buick, sporting license plate No. 111. In 1926, both the United States Patent and Canadian Patent Offices issued similar patents to McDonald for a board game called Crossword Game. The wood tile game featuring letters of the alphabet with point value was played on a checker board and predates the first version of Scrabble by 12 years."@en .
