In 1360 the Treaty of Br\u00E9tigny assigned Gu\u00EEnes, Marck and Calais \u2013 collectively the \"Pale of Cales\" \u2013 to English rule in perpetuity, but in a daring raid during the rule of Mary I, was retaken by France.
