Nella mattinata del 2 giugno fu data notizia del ritrovamento di alcuni resti, che poi si rivelarono non appartenenti all'aereo scomparso ma probabilmente a una nave: questa circostanza rese il caso un giallo.Nel corso delle prime operazioni di ricerca nessun superstite fu ritrovato: vennero recuperati 51 corpi e alcuni rottami galleggianti. Le indagini, durate complessivamente tre anni (dal giugno 2009 al giugno 2012), furono inizialmente ostacolate dalla mancanza di testimonianze oculari e di tracce radar attendibili, oltre che dalla difficolt\u00E0 di recuperare i resti del velivolo e le scatole nere, individuate e recuperate dal fondo dell'oceano soltanto due anni dopo l'incidente, nel maggio 2011. Le relazioni preliminari e intermedie del BEA rivelarono che l'aereo si schiant\u00F2 a seguito di uno stallo aerodinamico e che, pochi minuti prima dell'impatto, i tubi di Pitot iniziarono a fornire indicazioni di velocit\u00E0 aerodinamica errate a causa della formazione di ghiaccio che ne avrebbe causato il congelamento, l'otturazione e il conseguente malfunzionamento. L'ostruzione del tubo di Pitot era gi\u00E0 stata responsabile in passato degli incidenti del nel 1974 e dei voli Birgenair 301 ed AeroPer\u00F9 603 nel 1996.
