Solche Messger\u00E4te sind in einem kompakten Kasten untergebracht und besitzen heute in der Regel eine Verbindung zum Internet. Beschleunigungsschreiber sind in den F\u00E4llen von Nutzen, in denen die Bodenbewegung durch Erdbeben so stark sind, dass der Messbereich empfindlicherer Seismometer \u00FCberschritten wird. Der Erforschung von starken Bodenbewegungen aufgrund von Erdbeben hat sich ein Zweig der Erdbebenwissenschaften verschrieben, der sich dem Anbringen von Beschleunigungsschreibern in der N\u00E4he von gr\u00F6\u00DFeren St\u00F6rungen widmet. Die so gemessenen Daten, wie etwa die Geschwindigkeit des Bruchs der St\u00F6rung, k\u00F6nnten mit normalen Seismometern nicht gewonnen werden. Das bekannteste Beispiel solcher Untersuchungen ist das , bei dem zahlreiche Beschleunigungsschreiber in der N\u00E4he eines Abschnitts der San-Andreas-Verwerfung aufgestellt wurden, an dem ein gr\u00F6\u00DFeres Erdbeben erwartet wurde, welches am 28. September 2004 eintrat. Im Beschleunigungsschreiber sind drei Beschleunigungssensoren senkrecht zueinander angeordnet, heute zumeist als Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) gefertigt. Jeder der Sensoren misst in dieser Anordnung nur eine Richtung der auftretenden Beschleunigung. Aus den Einzelmessungen kann dann die dreidimensionale Bewegung des Ger\u00E4ts rekonstruiert werden. Im Gegensatz zum durchg\u00E4ngig aufzeichnenden Seismometer wird die Aufzeichnung von Beschleunigungsschreibern fast immer durch ein Erdbeben selbst ausgel\u00F6st. Zu diesem Zweck wird bei der Aktivierung des Ger\u00E4ts ein Schwellenwert der Beschleunigung eingestellt, bei dem die Aufzeichnung gestartet wird. Ohne eine direkte Internetverbindung oder \u00E4hnliche M\u00F6glichkeiten, aus der Ferne direkt auf das Ger\u00E4t zuzugreifen, ist die Wartung eines solchen Ger\u00E4ts schwierig. Viele Fahrten sind nach gr\u00F6\u00DFeren Erdbeben schon zu Beschleunigungsschreibern unternommen worden, nur um herauszufinden, dass der Speicher mit unwichtigen Daten gef\u00FCllt war, oder dass das Ger\u00E4t eine Fehlfunktion aufwies. Beschleunigungsschreiber werden auch dazu benutzt, die Reaktion von Geb\u00E4uden oder anderen Strukturen auf Erdbeben zu \u00FCberwachen.
