He was one of the first people in the province of New Brunswick, and the first resident of Shediac, New Brunswick, to own and operate an automobile. He purchased his first vehicle in 1908, a sports model McLaughlin Buick, sporting license plate No. 111. In 1926, both the United States Patent and Canadian Patent Offices issued similar patents to McDonald for a board game called Crossword Game.
