Aguto is a 1988 graduate of the United States Military Academy with a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering. He served as the commanding officer of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment from 2010 to 2012 and the 7th Army Training Command from July 2016 to May 2018. In November 2022, Aguto was nominated to be the first commanding general of Security Assistance Group–Ukraine.
