- Otto Valdemar Malling (Copenhaguen, 1 de juny de 1848 – 5 d'octubre de 1915) fou un músic danès del Romanticisme. Era germà del també compositor Jørgen Malling (1836-1907). Alumne del Conservatori de la seva ciutat natal, el 1885 hi tingué una càtedra de música, en la que tingué entre altres alumnes en Knudage Rilsager, i en Rudolph Simonsen, també fou mestre de capella. Figura entre els més notables compositors danesos. Va escriure moltes obres de música di càmera, i concerts per a piano, fantasies per a violí, obres corals i cantates. (ca)

Se convirtió en alumno de Niels Wilhelm Gade y Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann; a finales de su carrera compuso principalmente obras de órgano y música vocal, pero también escribió una Fantasia para violín y orquesta (en fa mayor, opus 20), un atractivo trío de piano schumaniano (en la opus menor 36, 1889) y un brahmsiano concierto para piano en do menor (opus 43, 1890). Su producción también contiene entre otras obras sustanciales, como la cantata Det hellige Land, opus 46, (publicada en 1897), una sinfonía en re menor, opus 17 (publicada en 1884) y un octeto para cuerdas, opus 50 (publicado en o antes de 1907). Malling escribió el primer libro de texto danés en orquestación, siguiendo las líneas del conservatorio francés. Enseñó teoría musical a en 1915. Otto Malling was born in Copenhagen. He became a pupil of Niels Wilhelm Gade and Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann; in his later career he mainly composed organ works and vocal music, but he also wrote a Fantasia for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 20, an appealing Schumannesque piano trio (in A minor, opus 36, 1889), piano quartet (in C minor, opus 80), and a Brahmsian piano concerto in C minor (opus 43, 1890), all of which are recorded and infrequently heard in concert. His output also contains among other substantial works a cantata Det hellige Land, opus 46, (published in 1897), a symphony in D minor, opus 17 (published in 1884), and an octet for strings, opus 50 (published in or before 1907). Malling wrote the first Danish textbook in orchestration, along French conservatory lines. He taught musical theory to Knudåge Riisager in 1915. He was also a music editor, creating piano reductions and vocal scores of works by Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann, Niels Wilhelm Gade and Christian Julius Hansen for the publisher Samfundet til udgivelse af dansk Musik. He was a co-founder and vice-conductor of The Concert Society, Copenhagen (1874), supporting himself as organist at various Copenhagen churches. His scores of organ music brought Malling some reputation abroad, but after his death he was soon forgotten in his native country as musical tastes changed. - Otto Valdemar Malling (Kopenhagen, 1 juni 1848 – aldaar, 5 oktober 1915) was een Deens componist en organist. Zijn broer was eveneens musicus. Zijn muziekopleiding kreeg Malling van Niels Gade en Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann aan het . Orgeldocent was Gottfried Matthison-Hansen. Zoals destijds gebruikelijk startte hij zijn muzikale loopbaan als (aankomend) dirigent van een zangvereniging, in dit geval de Studentersangforeningen. In weer wil van zijn leraar Niels Gade startte Malling een vereniging die een moderner repertoire wenste dan de behoudende concertvereniging van Gade zelf. De vereniging van Malling bestond tien jaar (1883-1893), waarna ze opgeheven werd. Ondertussen was hij begonnen met het schrijven van muziek, waarbij zijn opus 1 uiteraard bestond voor liederen voor mannenkoor. Werken met zang zou zijn repertoire blijven overheersen; hij schreef wel dertien cantates tegenover slechts één symfonie. Dat er geen muzikale ruzie was ontstaan tussen Malling en Gade blijkt uit het feit dat Gade hem in 1885 naar het conservatorium haalde om zelf les te gaan geven, vanaf 1899 zou hij er directeur van zijn. Een van zijn leerlingen was Knudåge Riisager. Naast genoemde werkzaamheden was hij organist van diverse kerken in Kopenhagen, de belangrijkste zijnde de Vor Frue Krike. Voor zijn werkzaamheden ontving hij in 1905 de Orde van de Dannebrog. Kopenhagen kent een Otto Mallings Gade. Een aantal werken uit zijn oeuvre van ongeveer honderd werken:

- Otto Valdemar Malling, född 1 juni 1848, död 5 oktober 1915, var en dansk tonsättare och organist, som verkade vid tiden efter de två stora personligheterna Niels W. Gade och J.P.E. Hartmann. Han hade dem båda som lärare vid Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium. Han var bror till Jørgen Malling. Mallings musikerkarriär började med posten som vice dirigent i Studenter-Sangforeningen, varefter han 1875 efter Christian Julius Hansens död i nio år besatt dirigentposten. Dessutom var han organist i 1878–1891, i Helligåndskirken till 1900 då han efterträdde Hartmann som domkyrkoorganist och i Vor Frue Kirke i Köpenhamn där han verkade till sin död. År 1883 blev han även lärare vid Musikkonservatoriet och 1899–1915 var han dess direktör. Å 1874 grundade han tillsammans med bland andra C.F.E. Horneman som komplement till och i opposition till Musikforeningen, som leddes av Gade och Hartmann. Malling var Koncertforeningens dirigent ända tills den lades ned 1893.
