- In 1840, Brigham Young instructed European converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about the principle of "gathering" with fellow saints to "Zion – the pure in heart." To do so meant literally leaving behind the ills of society to dwell in communities structured around principles of personal and civic behavior laid down by Jesus Christ. In the decade that followed, some 8,600 persons responded to that call, crossed the Atlantic, and trekked overland to reach concentrations of Latter-day Saints living in close-knit, quasi-theocratic communities on America's midwestern frontier.
