- Die Unity Party (Kürzel UP, deutsch Einheits-Partei) ist eine politische Partei in Liberia. Sie wurde 1984 von Dr. gegründet, der unter Präsident William Tolbert Post- und Telekommunikationsminister gewesen war, und war vor 2017 die Regierungspartei des Landes. Die Unity Party nahm bei den ersten Wahlen nach dem ersten Putsch von 1980 teil, und trat gegen den damaligen Präsidenten Samuel Doe im Oktober 1985 an. Die Partei blieb in der liberianischen Politik aktiv. UP-Kandidatin Ellen Johnson Sirleaf gewann die Präsidentschaftswahlen 2005, in denen sie George Weah von der Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in einem zweiten Wahlgang besiegte. Die Partei gewann insgesamt drei Sitze im Senat und acht in dem Repräsentantenhaus. In den vorangegangenen Wahlen, die am 19. Desde entonces es uno de los principales partidos políticos del país. Estuvo en la oposición durante todo el período de guerras civiles (1989-2003) y finalmente accedió al poder tras ganar las elecciones presidenciales de 2005 con Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf como candidata, dirigiendo desde entonces el primer gobierno democrático de la historia de Liberia. Tras las elecciones, en 2009, el Partido de la Unidad se fusionó con otros partidos representados en la Legislatura, lo que incrementó considerablemente su representación y capacidad electoral. Sirleaf volvió a ser candidata del partido en las elecciones de 2011. En estos comicios el partido consiguió una amplia victoria, logrando ser la primera minoría en ambas cámaras de la Legislatura (aunque muy alejado de una mayoría absoluta) y con Sirleaf siendo fácilmente reelegida en segunda vuelta luego del boicot de Winston Tubman, candidato del Congreso para el Cambio Democrático. A partir de las elecciones senatoriales de 2014, celebradas durante la epidemia de ébola que azotó al país y, por lo tanto, realizadas bajo el estado de emergencia declarado por Sirleaf, el Partido de la Unidad comenzó a declinar electoralmente debido a las medidas represivas que el gobierno debió adoptar para contener el brote. De este modo, el partido obtuvo una aplastante derrota ante el Congreso para el Cambio Democrático. - The Unity Party (UP) is a political party in Liberia that was started in 1984 by Edward B. Kesselly, also its first standard bearer. Officially founded at Buchanan in Grand Bassa County, the party was established on 27 July 1985. The Unity Party participated in the first elections after the 1980 coup, running against President Samuel Doe in October 1985. The party has remained active in Liberian politics since and was, until 2017, the ruling party. In the elections held on 19 July 1997, the UP presidential candidate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf won 9.58% of the vote. The party won 7 of 64 seats in the House of Representatives and 3 of 26 in the Senate. While international observers deemed the polls administratively free and transparent, they noted that it had taken place in an atmosphere of intimidation because most voters believed that former rebel leader and National Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Charles Taylor would return to war if defeated. Unity Party candidate Sirleaf won the 2005 presidential elections, defeating George Weah of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in a run-off. The party also won 3 seats in the Senate and 8 in the House of Representatives. The merger of the Liberia Unification Party and the Liberian Action Party into the Unity Party on 1 April 2009 substantially increased its representation in the Legislature. The party lost in the run-off of the 2017 presidential and representatives elections to ex-footballer, George Weah. On 13 January 2018 the party expelled President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from the party for campaigning for and with Weah against her own Vice President, Joseph Boakai, who was campaigning on the party ticket.
