- Als Zwiesel (auch Zwille) wird die Aufgabelung eines dominanten Pflanzentriebs (z. B. eines Baumstamms) in zwei kodominante, also etwa gleich starke, Arme („Stämmlinge“) bezeichnet. Zwiesel bilden sich entweder aus den zusammengewachsenen Stämmen nah beieinander stehender Bäume oder infolge der Ablösung eines dominanten Grundtriebs durch zwei oder mehr kodominante Triebe, welche meist durch eine Beschädigung der Terminalknospe bzw. des Spitzentriebs verursacht wird. Im Gegensatz zur Zwieselbildung erfolgt die Astbildung, indem aus einem bereits bestehenden dominanten Grundtrieb seitlich neue Triebe heraussprießen. Verzwieselungen treten nicht nur im Stammbereich auf. Der Verzwieselung eines Asts wird aber von vielen (z. B. in der forstwirtschaftlichen Praxis) keine gesonderte Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt und diese wird schlicht als Astgabel bezeichnet. Liegt der Zwiesel oberhalb der Brusthöhe, gilt ein Baumstamm üblicherweise als ein einzelner Stamm; liegt er darunter, gelten die Stämme als eigenständige Stämme. (de)

The wood grain orientation at the top of a tree fork is such that the wood's grain pattern most often interlocks to provide sufficient mechanical support. A common "malformation" of a tree fork is where bark has formed within the join, often caused by natural bracing occurring higher up in the crown of the tree, and these bark-included junctions often have a heightened risk of failure, especially when bracing branches are pruned out or are shaded out from the tree's crown.
