- The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama is an 1864 oil painting by Édouard Manet. The painting commemorates the Battle of Cherbourg of 1864, a naval engagement of the American Civil War between the Union cruiser USS Kearsarge and the Confederate raider CSS Alabama. Many spectators were able to see the battle from the coast of France and saw the USS Kearsarge sink the CSS Alabama. Not having witnessed the battle himself, Manet relied on press descriptions of the battle to document his work. Within one month of this battle, Manet had already completed this painting and got it on display in the print shop of Alfred Cadart in Paris. In 1872, Barbey d'Aurevilly stated that the painting was a "magnificent marine painting" and that "the sea ... is more frightening than the battle". It was hung at Alfred Cadart's and was praised by the critic Philippe Burty. The painting was acquired by the French art collector Marguerite Charpentier in 1878 and is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. (en)

La toile immortalise le combat naval à Cherbourg, au large des côtes normandes, entre le navire de l'Union USS Kearsarge et le bâtiment confédéré CSS Alabama le 19 juin 1864. Ces deux navires américains, l'un nordiste l'autre sudiste, se sont affrontés dans le cadre de la guerre de Sécession, à plus de six mille kilomètres de leur pays. Cette bataille annoncée — le Kearsarge attendait la sortie de l’Alabama du port français — avait eu un grand écho dans la presse française et s'était déroulée sous les yeux de centaines de badauds. L'œuvre, en dépeignant l’Alabama prêt à sombrer, est une annonce prémonitoire de la défaite finale des sudistes. Le fait que les deux bateaux soient relégués si loin en arrière-plan n'a pas été sans susciter des interrogations, Barbey d'Aurevilly ayant été jusqu'à avancer que ce choix de l'artiste rend la mer bien plus impressionnante que le combat lui-même. Le peintre de marine Louis Le Breton (1818-1866) a également peint ce combat dans un tableau au même titre. (fr)
