- Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 – 10 April 1962) was a Scottish painter and musician best known as the original bass guitarist of the English rock band the Beatles. Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his career as a painter, having previously attended the Liverpool College of Art. Sutcliffe and John Lennon are credited with inventing the name "Beetles" (sic), as they both liked Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets. They also had a fascination of group names with double meanings (as Crickets, for example, the word referring to both an insect as well as a sport), so Lennon then came up with "The Beatles", from the word beat (though Lennon's original spelling was "Beatals"). As a member of the group when it was a five-piece band, Sutcliffe is one of several people sometimes referred to as the "Fifth Beatle". When he performed with the Beatles in Hamburg, he met photographer Astrid Kirchherr, to whom he was later engaged. After leaving the Beatles, he enrolled in the Hamburg College of Art, studying under future pop artist Eduardo Paolozzi, who later wrote a report stating that Sutcliffe was one of his best students. Sutcliffe earned other praise for his paintings, which mostly explored a style related to abstract expressionism. While studying in West Germany, Sutcliffe began suffering from intense headaches and experiencing acute light sensitivity. In February 1962, he collapsed in the middle of an art class after complaining of head pains. German doctors performed tests, but were unable to determine what was causing the headaches. After collapsing again on 10 April 1962, he was taken to hospital, but died in the ambulance on the way there. The cause of death was later found to have been a brain haemorrhage – severe bleeding in the right ventricle of his brain. (en)

- 스튜어트 퍼거슨 빅터 섯클리프(Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe, 1940년 6월 23일 ~ 1962년 4월 10일)는 스코틀랜드계 화가 겸 음악인이다. 영국의 록 밴드 비틀즈에서 베이스 기타리스트를 맡았었던 것으로 가장 유명하다. 섯클리프는 화가로서의 경력을 추구하고자 밴드를 탈퇴하였다. 섯클리프와 존 레논은 '비틀즈'라는 회명을 지은 것으로도 알려져 있으며, 이것은 둘이가 모두 좋아한 버디 홀리의 밴드 크리케츠에서 유래한 것이었다. 둘이는 회명이 이중적 의미를 가지는 것에도 매력을 느꼈다 한다(예컨대 크리케츠는 곤충의 의미도 있지만 스포츠의 일종이라는 딴 의미도 내포한다). 그리하여 존 레논은 라는 말에 착안하여 비틀즈라는 이름을 짓게 되었던 것이다(원래는 말장난적으로 비탈스(Beatals)라고 철자되었다). 비틀즈가 5인조일 때 활동한 인물이었으므로 소위 로서 언급되는 인물 중 한 명이기도 하다. Sutcliffe deixou a banda para seguir carreira como pintor, tendo frequentado anteriormente o Liverpool College of Art. Acredita-se que Sutcliffe e John Lennon inventaram o nome "Beetles", pois ambos gostavam da banda de Buddy Holly, The Crickets. Eles usaram esse nome por um tempo, até que Lennon decidiu mudar o nome para "the Beatles", a partir da palavra beat. Sutcliffe spelade bas i the Quarrymen, som senare skulle byta namn till The Beatles, under åren 1960–1961, trots att han egentligen snarare brann för abstrakt expressionistisk konst.
