Le premier édifice datait de 1889, mais il fut détruit dans un incendie en 1940. L'église fut immédiatement reconstruite dans le style néo-roman. Sa proximité avec le Capitole des États-Unis la fait surnommer l'« église de la Chambre des Représentants » et elle est fréquentée par des membres du Congrès et des fonctionnaires.Une autre église située de l'autre côté du Capitole est surnommée l'« église du Sénat », il s'agit de l'église Saint-Joseph. Founded in 1820, St. Peter's is the second oldest Catholic parish in the City of Washington (but not the District of Columbia). The church building was originally constructed in 1889. However, it was destroyed by a fire in 1940 and rebuilt. The church's motto is, "To be a tangible manifestation of Christ in the community." The church's proximity to the United States Capitol Building attracts many members of Congress and congressional staffers, and its location on the House side of the Capitol has made it commonly known as the House church, while its counterpart on the Senate side, St. Joseph's, is known as the Senate church.
