Its charter was drafted in 1975, and its first President was the American sociologist Robert K. Merton. It is currently based out of the Department of Sociology at Louisiana State University. It publishes the quarterly academic journal Science, Technology, & Human Values and has a large annual conference attended by hundreds of scholars from a diverse range of fields, including Science and technology studies, sociology of science, science studies, history of science, philosophy of science, anthropology of science, economics, political science, psychology, as well as science educators and scientists. It gives out the Ludwik Fleck Prize annually for "best book in the area of science and technology studies", the Rachel Carson Prize for "a work of social or political relevance", the John Desmond Bernal Prize for an individual who made "a distinguished contribution to the field", and the for "outstanding scholarship in science and technology studies" by a graduate student. L'association publie la revue académique Science, Technology, & Human Values et organise une conférence annuelle qui rassemble des centaines d'universitaires appartenant à diverses disciplines telles les Science and technology studies (STS), la sociologie des sciences, les science studies, l'histoire des sciences, la philosophie des sciences, l'anthropologie des sciences, l'économie, les sciences politiques, etc. On y rencontre aussi des praticiens et des scientifiques. Pour récompenser le meilleur livre dans le domaine des STS, la société attribue annuellement le prix Ludwik-Fleck (Fleck étant considéré comme un important précurseur de l'épistémologie constructiviste et de la démarche adoptée dans la sociologie des sciences et de la connaissance scientifique). Elle attribue également le Rachel Carson Prize pour un ouvrage consacré à une étude socio-politique, le John Desmond Bernal Prize pour la personne s'étant distinguée par une contribution importante dans les domaines couverts par 4S et le Nicholas C.
