- Biometan je vyčištěný bioplyn, který obsahuje alespoň 95 % methanu. Svým složením je identický se zemním plynem, rozdíl je pouze ve způsobu jeho vzniku. Biometan produkovaný z odpadní biomasy má v rámci běžných biopaliv nejnižší emise skleníkových plynů a nejnižší spotřebu energie ve svém životním cyklu. Je možné ho ukládat a skladovat, což zvyšuje jeho potenciál pro praktické využití při transformaci energetiky na obnovitelné zdroje. (cs)

C'est la version renouvelable non fossile du gaz naturel ; une source d'énergie qui peut en Europe contribuer à l'objectif du 3 × 20 et à la transition énergétique, avec moins d'émissions de gaz à effet de serre (il vaut mieux brûler le méthane que le libérer dans l'air, car c'est un puissant gaz à effet de serre), dans une perspective de troisième révolution industrielle ou de développement durable. - Renewable natural gas (RNG), also known as sustainable natural gas (SNG) or biomethane, is a biogas which has been upgraded to a quality similar to fossil natural gas and having a methane concentration of 90% or greater. By increasing the concentration of methane to a similar level as natural gas, it becomes possible to distribute the gas to customers via the existing gas grid and use in existing appliances. Renewable natural gas is a subset of synthetic natural gas or substitute natural gas (SNG). Multiple ways of methanising carbon dioxide/monoxide and hydrogen exist, including biomethanation, the Sabatier process and a new electrochemical process pioneered in the United States currently undergoing trials. - Bio-SNG SNG står för Subsitute Natural Gas, på svenska används ibland benämningen syntetisk naturgas. Förledet bio anger att gasen producerats från biomassa exempelvis via förgasning och metanisering eller via rötning och uppgradering.Bio-SNG kan ses som ett alternativ och komplement till fossil metan. Redan idag matas uppgraderad biogas in på gasnätet på ett antal platser i Sverige; Laholm, Helsingborg (2), Bjuv, Göteborg, Falkenberg och Malmö. Ytterligare anläggningar är på gång. Bio-SNG via förgasning och metanisering kan framställas med hög verkningsgrad och ca 60-70 % av träflisets energiinnehåll återfinns i form av metan och ytterligare ca 20 % kan tas till vara i form av värme.
