In elementary algebra, root rationalisation is a process by which radicals in the denominator of an algebraic fraction are eliminated. If the denominator is a monomial in some radical, say with k < n, rationalisation consists of multiplying the numerator and the denominator by and replacing by if n is even or by x if n is odd (if k ≥ n, the same replacement allows us to reduce k until it becomes lower than n. If the denominator is linear in some square root, say rationalisation consists of multiplying the numerator and the denominator by and expanding the product in the denominator.
