- P.J. (Piet) Lemstra (born 26 October 1946, Godlinze (Groningen)), nicknamed Plem, is a Dutch professor of chemistry. Prof. Lemstra received his PhD from the University of Groningen in 1975. He then post-doctoral fellow at the University of Bristol (UK) under Professor Andrew Keller FRS. From 1976 to 1985, he worked at DSM Research, where he and Paul Smith, developed the super strong Dyneema fiber. In 1985 Professor Lemstra became professor of Polymer Technology at the Eindhoven University of Technology . From 1990 to 1995 he was the first Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology. From 1994 to 1997 had been director of the graduate school (PTN) and in 1997 he founded together with Professor Leen Struik the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI), where he worked until 2004 as scientific director. In 2004 he founded the Polymer Technology Group Eindhoven BV with Laurent Nelissen, in favor of cooperation with SMEs. In February 2008, Lemstra (until March 2011) Dean again. Vervolgens was hij post-doctoraal fellow aan de Universiteit van Bristol (UK) onder professor Andrew Keller. Van 1976 tot 1985 werkte hij bij DSM Research waar hij samen met Paul Smith de supersterke vezel Dyneema heeft ontwikkeld. In 1985 werd Lemstra hoogleraar aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Van 1990 tot 1995 was hij voor de eerste maal decaan van de faculteit Scheikundige Technologie. Van 1994-1997 was Lemstra directeur van de onderzoeksschool Polymeren (PTN) en in 1997 richtte hij samen met professor het (DPI) op, waar hij tot 2004 werkte als wetenschappelijk directeur. In 2004 richtte hij met de op ten behoeve van de samenwerking met het MKB. In februari 2008 werd Lemstra (tot en met maart 2011) wederom decaan. Op 30 september 2011 hield hij -na ruim een kwart eeuw aan de TU/e-zijn afscheidscollege. Daarna ging hij aan de slag in China. Piet Lemstra is de jongere broer van de oud-politicus Wolter Lemstra en de oom van politica Adri Bom-Lemstra. (nl)
