- La acilalanina es un fungicida empleado en agronomía. Es uno de los mejores fungicidas sistémicos aplicables frente a oomicetes, como son Pythium y Phytophthora, así como varios mildius. Su representante más importante es el , si bien se vende como Ridomil©, directamente aplicable sobre el follaje o suelo; como Apron es válido para tratar semillas, y como suavizador para céspedes y ornamentales. El metalaxyl de IQV (Industrias Químicas del Vallés), Armetil©, es aplicable sobre el follaje, suelo y semillas. De carácter persistente, controla la biota micológica de suelos y semillas evitando la aparición de ahogamientos de plántulas y pudriciones varias, que son los síntomas más usuales de los oomicetos Pythium y Phytophtora; no obstante, también se emplea para evitar la aparición de cancros ocasionados por este último, así como ciertos mildius. Posee actividad biológica incluso cuando la enfermedad está ya instaurada, no solo como profiláctico. Hidrosoluble, se transloca vía xilema desde las raíces de la planta a la parte aérea, aunque su transporte lateral es más lento. Puesto que existen patógenos resistentes, se recomienda su uso combinado con otros fungicidas de amplio espectro. (es)
- Metalaxyl is an acylalanine fungicide with systemic function. Its chemical name is methyl N-(methoxyacetyl)-N-(2,6-xylyl)-DL-alaninate. It can be used to control Pythium in a number of vegetable crops, and Phytophthora in peas. Metalaxyl-M is the ISO common name and Ridomil Gold is the trade name for the optically pure (-) / D / R active stereoisomer, which is also known as mefenoxam. It is the active ingredient in the seed treatment agent . The fungicide has suffered severe resistance problems. The fungicide was marketed for use against Phytophthora infestans. However, in the summer of 1980, in the Republic of Ireland, the crop was devastated by a potato blight epidemic after a resistant race of the oomycete appeared. Irish farmers later successfully sued the company for their losses.Maximum pesticide residue limits for the EU/UK are set at 0.5 mg/kg for oranges and 1.0 mg/kg for apples. As early as 1998 Pythium was known to be widely developing resistance to metalaxyl which was the most effective control at the time. Various Pythium populations have been known to have resistance to mefenoxam since the 1980s and metalaxyl since 1984. There is wide variability in resistance/sensitivity between Pythium species, with some populations showing complete ineffectiveness. (en)

R-metalaxyl is de meest effectieve van de twee en wordt aangeduid als metalaxyl-M of mefenoxam in de Verenigde Staten. Indien enantiomeer-zuiver metalaxyl-M gebruikt wordt is er maar half zoveel product nodig om hetzelfde effect te verkrijgen. Moderne producten bevatten vrijwel steeds metalaxyl-M, gewoonlijk in combinatie met een of meerdere andere fungiciden zoals fluazinam of mancozeb. Metalaxyl werd in 1979 op de markt gebracht door Ciba-Geigy (later Novartis en Syngenta). Het werd een van de meest gebruikte fungiciden in een grote verscheidenheid van teelten. Ridomil en Subdue zijn merknamen van Ciba-Geigy/Syngenta. In 1996 werd de enantiomeer-zuivere metalaxyl-M geïntroduceerd.
