- The Melrose Cup is the main prize of the Rugby World Cup Sevens. The trophy is named after the town of Melrose, Scotland, the birthplace of rugby sevens where in 1883 local butcher boy Ned Haig with help of his boss David Sanderson invited local rugby union teams to play a small tournament as a fundraiser event for the Melrose Rugby Club that had financial issues. The trophy has been presented to the winner of the world cup since the inaugural tournament in 1993. The only teams to have held the trophy are England, Wales, Fiji and current cup holders New Zealand. The winner of the first tournament was England. (en)

Puchar wziął swoją nazwę od miejscowości Melrose w Szkocji, gdzie w roku 1883 z inicjatywy młodego pomocnika rzeźnika Neda Haiga oraz jego szefa Davida Sandersona zorganizowano turniej mający na celu wspomóc lokalną drużynę rugby. Do turnieju zaproszono lokalne drużyny i zaproponowano uproszczone rozgrywki, zmniejszając liczbę zawodników z 15 do 7, aby jak najwięcej drużyn mogło się pojawić i wspomóc zbiórkę. Trofeum zostało ustanowione z okazji pierwszego Pucharu Świata w roku 1993 i wyglądem nawiązuje do trofeum Ladies Cup – pucharu, o który rywalizowano w roku 1883. Trofeum ma kształt dużego złotego kielicha na stopce z grawerunkiem „Melrose Cup” Pierwszą drużyną, która zdobyła trofeum, była reprezentacja Anglii. (pl)
