Créée en 1920 dans le but de développer le football à Alger ; elle s'arrête un moment pour cause de Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis reprend en 1946. Finalement elle cesse toute activité en 1962 après la fin de la Guerre d'Algérie qui consacre l'indépendance de l'Algérie et qui entraîne l'exode massif des colons vers la France signifiant l'abandon des clubs sportifs dirigés par les « colons » ainsi que leurs structures. Affiliée à la Fédération française de football, elle était membre de l'ULNAF, dont il y a les 4 autres membres ; la Ligue d'Alger possédait donc comme ses quatre consœurs le statut de « ligue » ou « championnat » amateur, et possédait quatre divisions. Elles étaient très structurées et très hiérarchisés et organisaient des compétitions pour toutes les catégories d'âges en plus d'une dite « corporative » (catégorie ou championnat « corporative », ou entreprise), dont le plus haut niveau était appelé Division d'Honneur. Fondata nel 1920 con l'obiettivo di sviluppare il calcio ad Algeri, cessò le attività allo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale, per poi essere ricostituita nel 1946. Nel 1962, con l'indipendenza dell'Algeria al termine della guerra nel paese, fu ricostituita su base nazionale, parallelamente alla fine del controllo coloniale francese sui club e sulle strutture sportive algerine. Affiliata alla Federazione calcistica della Francia con altre quattro leghe del Nordafrica , la Lega di Algeri gestiva quattro divisioni di un campionato che poi divenne il campionato algerino di calcio, al cui vertice vi era la Division d'Honneur.
