- The IBM AS/400 (Application System/400) is a family of midrange computers from IBM announced in June 1988 and released in August 1988. It was the successor to the System/36 and System/38 platforms, and ran the OS/400 operating system. Lower-cost but more powerful than its predecessors, the AS/400 was extremely successful at launch, with an estimated 111,000 installed by the end of 1990 and annual revenue reaching $14 billion that year, increasing to 250,000 systems by 1994, and about 500,000 shipped by 1997. A key concept in the AS/400 platform is Technology Independent Machine Interface (TIMI), a platform-independent instruction set architecture (ISA) that is compiled along with the native machine language instructions. The platform has used this capability to change the underlying processor architecture without breaking application compatibility. Early systems were based on a 48-bit CISC instruction set architecture known as the Internal Microprogrammed Interface (IMPI), originally developed for the System/38. In 1991, the company introduced a new version of the system running on a 64-bit PowerPC-derived CPU, the IBM RS64. Due to the use of TIMI, applications for the original CISC-based programs continued to run on the new systems without modification. The RS64 was replaced with POWER4 processors in 2001, which was followed by POWER5 and POWER6 in later upgrades. The AS/400 went through multiple re-branding exercises, finally becoming the System i in 2006. In 2008, IBM consolidated the separate System i and System p product lines (which had mostly identical hardware by that point) into a single product line named IBM Power Systems. The name "AS/400" is sometimes used informally to refer to the IBM i operating system running on modern Power Systems hardware. (en)

Se trata de un sistema multiusuario, con una interfaz controlada mediante menús y comandos CL (Control Language) intuitivos que utiliza terminales y un sistema operativo basado en objetos y bibliotecas, denominado OS/400. Un punto fuerte del OS/400 es su integración con la base de datos DB2/400, siendo los objetos del sistema miembros de la citada base de datos. Esta también da soporte para los datos de las aplicaciones, dando como resultado un sistema integrado potente y estable. Actualmente, con la denominación IBM i, anteriormente conocida como System i e iSeries, soporta otros sistemas operativos tales como GNU/Linux, AIX o incluso Windows en una placa Intel integrada, soportando también de forma nativa múltiples aplicaciones antes reservadas a Windows. La máquina se basó originalmente en una CPU CISC de IBM, pero en 1996 se migró a una familia de CPU RISC basada en microprocesadores PowerPC de 64 bits. Hasta marzo de 2010, los últimos modelos, que bajo la denominación IBM Power Systems unificaron las plataformas y System p de IBM, se basan en el procesador POWER7. La capacidad de supervivencia de la máquina es debida a su capa de MI o Machine Interface, que aísla el hardware y permite, mediante el uso de API, que el sistema operativo y los se aprovechen de los avances en hardware sin tener que recompilarlo y de su adaptación al entorno empresarial crítico, en donde la estabilidad y fiabilidad del sistema son fundamentales. Puede trabajar con los lenguajes de programación RPG, PHP, C, Java, COBOL, SQL, BASIC y REXX. O AS/400 é um sistema orientado a objetos com base de dados integrada que foi desenhada para implementar o modelo de base de dados relacional de E.F.Codd no sistema operativo e hardware. Todo o software necessário para correr este computador é incluído e integrado. Trata-se basicamente em: micro código, sistema operativo e programas licenciados. O iSeries/AS400 é a versão seguinte à máquina com base de dados System/38 inicialmente lançada em 1985, sucessor do sistema 36, sucessor do sistema 34, que por sua vez sucedeu ao sistema 3, este ainda usando cartões perfurados, quer a nível de ficheiros como a nível de programação. Jest powszechnie znany pod starą nazwą. Zastąpił w biznesie inne popularne produkty IBM, System/36 i System/38, konsolidując je w jedną linię. Pierwsze maszyny AS/400 były koloru szarego obecnie wszystkie są czarne. Skrót AS oznacza serwer aplikacji (Application Server). Maszyna, w zależności od wersji, przeznaczona jest dla małego biznesu (wersje Express) lub oddziałów większych firm. Jest dostarczany z wirtualną maszyną Javy, oprogramowaniem bazodanowym i często preinstalowanym oprogramowaniem Domino (Lotus Notes z przeglądarką). Jest systemem o największej na świecie stabilności. Od dawna posiada wiele innowacyjnych rozwiązań, np. zwiększenie mocy obliczeniowej na życzenie poprzez włączenie dodatkowych procesorów. AS/400 jest używany najczęściej jako hurtownia danych (data warehouse) i środowisko rozwojowe do opracowywania programów biznesowych, zwłaszcza dla e-commerce. Od roku 2007 System I promowany jest przez IBM we współpracy z firmą 3Com jako serwer telefonii IP zintegrowany z zainstalowanymi na tej samej maszynie aplikacjami pracy grupowej ( i Quickr).
