- The first to fully understand, since the great age of Greek sculpture, the identity of the nude with the great figurative art, was Michelangelo. Before him it had been studied with a scientific view, as a means of capturing the figure wrapped in clothing. Michelangelo saw that it was an end in itself and made the nude the supreme purpose of his art. For him, art and nude were synonymous. (en)
