- The Harmelen train disaster, on 8 January 1962, was the worst railway accident in the history of the Netherlands. Harmelen, in the central Netherlands, is the location of a railway junction where a branch to Amsterdam leaves the Rotterdam to Utrecht line. It is common at high-speed junctions to avoid the use of diamond crossings wherever possible – instead a ladder crossing is employed where trains destined for the branch line cross over to the track normally employed for trains travelling in the opposite direction for a short distance before taking the branch line. The accident happened 18 months after the Woerden train accident, the derailment of a British furlough train nearby. Previously the Weesp train disaster of 1918 had been the worst railway disaster in the Netherlands. (en)

Bij de botsing tussen twee reizigerstreinen vielen 93 doden en 52 gewonden, waarmee dit de grootste treinramp uit de geschiedenis van de spoorwegen in Nederland is. Het ongeluk werd aangemerkt als nationale ramp. Vrijdag 12 januari 1962 werd als dag van nationale rouw afgekondigd en de Hilversumse radiozenders brachten ook de tussenliggende dagen alleen ernstige muziek en aangepaste programma's ten gehore. Hoewel dit ongeluk bekend bleef als de treinramp bij Harmelen, vond het plaats bij de buurtschap , op het grondgebied van de toenmalige buurgemeente Kamerik. Op 9 januari 1962 werd het overlijden van 82 slachtoffers ingeschreven in het overlijdensregister van de gemeente Kamerik, op 10 januari 1962 dat van vijf slachtoffers. Als aangever in alle overlijdensakten trad de adjudant van de Rijkspolitie Aart Dirk Viezee op. In 1964 werd De Putkop toegevoegd aan Harmelen. (nl)

W wyniku czołowego zderzenia pociągów osobowych, śmierć poniosły 93 osoby, a 54 zostały ranne. Do dziś jest to największa pod względem liczby ofiar katastrofa kolejowa w historii Holandii. W poniedziałek 8 stycznia 1962 roku, około godziny 9:20, pociąg osobowy relacji Rotterdam - Amsterdam wjechał na tor przy zielonym świetle na semaforze. Pociąg poruszał się z prędkością 75 km/h. W tym samym czasie z przeciwnej strony nadjechał pociąg expresowy relacji Utrecht - Rotterdam, jadący z prędkością ponad 100 km/h. Ze względu na gęstą mgłę, jaka się wówczas unosiła nad Harmelen, maszynista pociągu expresowego nie zauważył czerwonego światła na semaforze i wjechał na tor, na którym znajdował się pociąg osobowy. Maszynista expresu, widząc światła nadjeżdżającego z przeciwka pociągu osobowego, natychmiast pociągnął za hamulec bezpieczeństwa, jednak oba składy znajdowały się już w zbyt małej odległości od siebie, by uniknąć zderzenia. Spośród 500 osób znajdujących się w obu pociągach, życie straciły 93 osoby, w tym maszyniści obu pociągów. (pl)
