- Foundations of Economic Analysis is a book by Paul A. Samuelson published in 1947 (Enlarged ed., 1983) by Harvard University Press. It is based on Samuelson's 1941 doctoral dissertation at Harvard University. The book sought to demonstrate a common mathematical structure underlying multiple branches of economics from two basic principles: maximizing behavior of agents (such as of utility by consumers and profits by firms) and stability of equilibrium as to economic systems (such as markets or economies). Among other contributions, it advanced the theory of index numbers and generalized welfare economics. It is especially known for definitively stating and formalizing qualitative and quantitative versions of the "comparative statics" method for calculating how a change in any parameter (say, a change in tax rates) affects an economic system. One of its key insights about comparative statics, called the correspondence principle, states that stability of equilibrium implies testable predictions about how the equilibrium changes when parameters are changed. Het boek beoogde een gemeenschappelijke wiskundige structuur aan te tonen die ten grondslag lag aan meerdere deelgebieden van de economie: maximaliserend gedrag van economische agenten (zoals in het nut door consumenten en in de winsten door bedrijven) en de stabiliteit van evenwichten in economische systemen (zoals markten of de gehele economie). Naast andere bijdragen leverde het boek met name een bijdrage aan de theorie van de indexcijfers en de veralgemeende welvaartseconomie. Foundation of Economic Analysis is vooral bekend voor het opstellen van de definitieve geformaliseerde en kwantitatieve versies van de "comparatieve statica"-methode bij het berekenen van hoe een wijziging in een enkele parameter (bijvoorbeeld een verandering in de belastingvoet) van invloed kan zijn op een economisch systeem. Procurou demonstrar uma estrutura matemática comum subjacente a vários ramos da ciência económica a partir de dois princípios básicos: o comportamento maximizador dos agentes económicos (como a utilidade pelos consumidores e o lucro pelas empresas) e a estabilidade do equilíbrio para os sistemas económicos (tais como os mercados ou as economias). Entre outras contribuições, avançou a teoria dos números índice e a economia social generalizada.
