Molecular phylogenetic studies indicate that the genus as presently understood comprises a large number of unrelated lineages (i.e., is paraphyletic), only a few of which have names (e.g., the genera Kidokuga and Sphrageidus), and is therefore in serious need of revision. Soorten zijn kosmopolitisch en wijdverbreid in Palearctische, Afrikaanse, Oosterse en Australische regio's. Moleculaire fylogenetische studies geven aan dat het geslacht zoals het momenteel wordt begrepen een groot aantal niet-verwante geslachten omvat (d.w.z. parafyletisch is), waarvan slechts enkele namen hebben (bijv. de geslachten Kidokuga en Sphrageidus), en daarom ernstig aan herziening toe is.
