- Ectromelia virus (ECTV) is a virus of the family Poxviridae and the genus Orthopoxvirus that causes mousepox, a disease of mice. It has only been seen in mouse colonies kept for research purposes but believed that wild populations of mice and other rodents in Europe are naturally infected with ECTV. Mousepox causes skin lesions, a purulent rash on the body of mice, and generalized disease, which can be fatal. It is the only poxvirus to cause disease naturally in mice. (en)
- Das Ektromelie-Virus (ECTV, Mäusepocken-Virus) ist das einzige Mitglied der Virusfamilie Poxviridae (Pockenviren), das bei Mäusen eine Erkrankung auslösen kann. Die Erkrankung durch das ECTV wurde 1930 erstmals beschrieben und 1948 die serologische Ähnlichkeit mit dem Vaccinia-Virus erkannt. Das ECTV verursacht zwei verschiedene Krankheitsbilder: Eine milde, chronische Form mit typischen, pockenartigen Hautläsionen (Mäusepocken) und eine akute, disseminierte Infektion, die mit dem Befall verschiedener innerer Organe oft tödlich verläuft. Bei Mäuseembryonen verursacht das ECTV eine schwere Fehlbildung der langen Röhrenknochen (Ektromelie), nach der das Virus benannt ist. Eine Erkrankung durch ECTV wurde ausschließlich an Labormäusen beobachtet. Das Virus selbst wurde auch in wildlebenden Mäusen vermutet. Es wird innerhalb von Laborpopulationen sehr leicht durch Tröpfchen- und Schmierinfektion übertragen. (de)
