- Domina is a dark-skinned variety of grape used for red wine. It was created by Germanviticulturalist at the Geilweilerhof Institute for Grape Breeding in the Palatinate in 1927 by crossing the varieties Blauer Portugieser and Pinot noir (known in Germany as Spätburgunder). Work on the variety was the continued by Bernhard Husfeld at the same institute in the 1950s. The variety received protection and was released for general cultivation in 1974. In 2006, there were 395 hectares (980 acres) of Domina in Germany, with an increasing trend. Domina plantings are primarily found in Franconia. Domina wines are dark red and rich in tannin. In Belgium, it is authorised for AOCs : Hageland and Haspengouw. Domina gives high yields and is not very demanding with respect to vineyard conditions. It ripens later than its parent Blauer Portugieser but earlier than its parent Pinot noir. Domina wines are full-bodied and have a deep colour, but are not considered as elegant as German-grown Spätburgunder. (en)

L'espèce résiste bien au froid. Les vins sont très foncés, appropriés comme vin de couverture, pleins et riches sur extrait avec une haute concentration en tanin. - Domina is een nieuw blauw druivenras voortgekomen uit het kruisen met de Blauer Portugieser en Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). De landbouwkundige en druivenkweker ontwikkelde deze in 1927 op het Duitse "Institut für Rebenzüchtung Geilweilerhof". In 1974 werd de druif officieel aan de soortenlijst toegevoegd. Het is daarmee een edele druif behorend tot de vitis vinifera. Belangrijk aan deze druif is de goede vorstbestendigheid. Het kan een hoog tanninegehalte en zuurgraad hebben. De wijn ervan is diep rood door de rijke kleurstof. Hierom wordt ze ook wel ingezet om bepaalde wijnen donkerder en sterker te maken. De druif wordt gebruikt in de Duitse wijnbouw. Met name in de wijnstreek Franken. In 2007 ongeveer 400 hectare. Ook in andere Duitse wijnstreken zoals in het wijngebied van de Ahr komt de Domina wel voor.
