- L'avarca (plural avarques) és un calçat tradicional de Menorca fet amb tires de cuir i una sola de cautxú de pneumàtic. Antigament era la sabata usada per la gent del camp, però actualment s'ha popularitzat com a calcer d'estiu fora i tot de Menorca. L'origen de la paraula avarca és incert, tot i que probablement ve de la forma preromana abarka, del mateix significat i que es troba representada en el basc, així com en occità, galaicoportuguès i espanyol. The shoes are made using a leather upper and a rubber sole. Avarca is a traditional sandal originally developed in Menorca in the Balearic Islands. They were originally made from a leather upper and with the sole made from a recycled car tyre. Nowadays however the soles are made in the style of a car tire but from a purpose made mould. These are hard wearing and much lighter in weight than the original car tire sole. Only original avarca manufacturers are granted with the label "Avarca de Menorca". This label is granted by local Government and guarantees that avarcas accomplishes minimum quality standards and avarcas are really manufactured in Menorca island. (en)

De zool van de avarca is traditioneel gesneden uit een oude autoband die aan de voet wordt gehouden door een kleine band van zacht leder aan de achterkant. Oude banden worden op de Balearen veelvuldig gedumpt of illegaal verbrand en vormen zo een belasting voor het milieu. Transport naar het vasteland is duur en levert niets op. Tegenwoordig worden ze gemaakt met gebruik van een speciale mal die dezelfde vorm geeft. Hierdoor zijn de sandalen veel lichter en tegelijk wel steviger dan het oorspronkelijke autobandschoeisel. "Avarca de Menorca" is een beschermd label. Dit label wordt beheerd door de lokale overheid van Menorca en alleen afgegeven aan de oorspronkelijke producenten van deze sandalen. Daarnaast stelt de lokale overheid ook enkele voorwaarden aan de kwaliteit van de producten en moeten de sandalen op het eiland zelf gemaakt worden om het label te verdienen.
