The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR), unofficially also the City of Aberdeen Bypass, is a trunk road expressway which wraps around the west of Aberdeen, Scotland. The Southern Leg also includes the 4-mile (6.4 km) A956 spur that links the bypass to the A92 at Charlestown and provides access to the south of the city. The construction of the AWPR also included extensive upgrades to the A90 continuing north from Blackdog with the 9-mile (14 km) Balmedie to Tipperty dual carriageway, supplanting the existing road which was subsequently detrunked and is now the B977. The AWPR's primary route is designated as part of the A90, with the older road of that designation continuing along the coast and through the city itself renamed the A92, which now connects with the AWPR at both its northern (Blackdog) and southern (Stonehaven) termini. As the bypass itself is predominantly rural, it crosses mainly through farmland and forest while skimming past built-up areas. The AWPR despite being built to dual carriageway standard is legally classed as a special road by the Scottish Government. As all motorways in the United Kingdom are special roads (however not all special roads are motorways), this means that the bypass is governed under specific regulations which restrict its use and makes the AWPR unique as opposed to other trunk roads in Scotland. With the exception of the Stonehaven and Cleanhill roundabouts, all junctions on the AWPR are grade-separated with adjoining slip roads. There is a continuous concrete step barrier that runs the length of the road. Road signage on the AWPR is motorway-grade in regards to size. The bypass is also governed by a full clearway order which prohibits stopping at any time and is restricted to Class I and II vehicles, barring certain motorcyclists, moped riders, horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians from using the road. The road's statutory instrument prevents the AWPR from being a legal motorway. The bypass despite these restrictions was not built to motorway standard as it lacks hard shoulders and instead includes emergency laybys, the road is also not entirely grade-separated. The AWPR is one of the most important trunk roads in Scotland. The AWPR makes no direct contact with surrounding infrastructure that isn't through the road's junctions, the bypass consists of many flyovers and underpasses through existing local roads in addition to bridges over the Rivers Dee and Don. The bypass connects to other primary roads in the vicinity of Aberdeen including the A96, A944, the A93 and the A947. The Balmedie-Tipperty stretch is not part of the bypass and therefore not bound by the AWPR's statutory instrument, making it an ordinary dual carriageway. First announced in January 2003, the road was approved by Scottish Ministers in late 2009 with the original costs estimated at between £295 million and £395 million.
