- The 1980 Tournament of the Americas, since 2005 called the FIBA Americas Championship or the FIBA AmeriCup, was the inaugural edition of this basketball tournament, and it was hosted by Puerto Rico in San Juan from April 18 to April 25, 1980. The berths allocated to the Americas for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were determined. The United States did not participate in the tournament. Puerto Rico won the tournament by going 5-1 in the round robin. Because of the U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games, eventual berths went to Brazil, the fourth-place finisher, and Cuba, the sixth-place finisher. (en)
- Das Torneo de las Américas 1980 (englisch The 1980 Tournament of the Americas) ist die erste Auflage der Basketball-Amerikameisterschaft und fand vom 18. bis 25. April 1980 in der puerto-ricanischen Hauptstadt San Juan statt. Bei dem erstmals ausgetragenen Turnier ging es um die Qualifikation der nationalen Auswahlmannschaften des fünf Jahre zuvor gegründeten Kontinentalverbands FIBA Amerika für das Basketballturnier bei den Olympischen Spielen 1980. Im Nachhinein wurde das Turnier in die Reihenfolge der Amerikameisterschaften aufgenommen und zählte als Kontinentalmeisterschaft für nationale Auswahlmannschaften der Herren der FIBA Amerika. Von den am Ende sieben teilnehmenden Mannschaften qualifizierten sich die drei Medaillengewinner direkt für die Olympischen Spiele. Die Auswahl der Vereinigten Staaten war als Goldmedaillengewinner des olympischen Turniers von Montreal 1976 und Titelverteidiger automatisch qualifiziert und nahm nicht am Qualifikationsturnier teil. Bereits eine Woche vor Beginn der Olympiaqualifikation beschloss das United States Olympic Committee den Boykott der Sommerspiele 1980 in Moskau. Bis zum Beginn der Olympischen Spiele 1980 schlossen sich alle Medaillengewinner der Olympiaausscheidung im Kontinentalverband FIBA Amerika diesem Boykott an, so dass letztendlich als Mannschaften der FIBA Amerika Brasilien und Kuba zum olympischen Turnier eingeladen wurden. Esta competición fue clasificatoria para los Juegos Olímpicos de Moscú 1980. Los Estados Unidos no participó en el torneo. Puerto Rico ganó el torneo por finalizar con un récord de 5-1 en el todos contra todos. (es)

La nazionale degli Stati Uniti, non presente in quanto già qualificata alle olimpiadi come detentrice della medaglia d'oro, a causa del boicottaggio non parteciperà a Mosca 1980. Anche Porto Rico, Canada ed Argentina che ottennero la qualificazione piazzandosi ai primi tre posti del torneo rinunciarono, venendo sostituite da Brasile, Cuba e Polonia. (it)

As partidas ocorreram em San Juan no Coliseu Roberto Clemente. Essa Copa América de Basquetebol Masculino deu duas vagas para os Jogos Olímpicos de 1980 em Moscou, União Soviética. A Seleção Porto-Riquenha venceu o torneio, mas devido ao boicote aos Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 1980, por conta da Guerra Fria, foram enviadas para as Olimpíadas as seleções do Brasil e de Cuba.
