Durante la guerra francoprusiana sirvió como capitán del ejército suizo, y luego permaneció en Egipto hasta el comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, cuando regresó a Suiza. Murió en 1926 en Malagny, cerca de Ginebra. (es)

Arrivé en Égypte en 1868, sa première action fut de copier les textes religieux du temple d'Horus à Edfou qu'il publia sous le titre de Mythe d'Horus en 1870. En 1882, il est invité à participer aux fouilles de la Fondation pour l'exploration de l'Égypte (Egypt Exploration Fund) à Tell el Maskhuta. (fr)

Born in Geneva, he studied at the University of Geneva, King's College, London, and the Universities of Bonn, Paris, and Berlin. He was a student of Karl Richard Lepsius and later his literary executor. In 1873, he married Marguerite de Pourtalès who accompanied him on his 14 trips to Egypt, meticulously recording his finds in photographs and drawings and including detailed accounts of the expeditions in her diaries. Efter sin första resa på Nilen, 1869, utgav han det förtjänstfulla arbetet Textes relatifs au mythe d'Horus. Han besökte därefter ofta Egypten, bland annat för att på uppdrag av det engelska Egypt Exploration Fund utföra grävningar.
