- Ælfric (* 955; † 1020) mit Beinamen Grammaticus war einer der bedeutendsten Gelehrten des angelsächsischen Mönchtums im Frühmittelalter. Ælfric wuchs in der Klosterschule von Winchester unter Æthelwold auf und wurde um 971 Mönch der Benediktinerabtei Abingdon. Von Bischof Aelfnah von Winchester wurde er im Jahre 987 zum Unterweisen der Mönche in das Kloster Cornel geschickt. 1005 wurde Ælfric Abt von Eynsham. Im Jahre 1020 (nach Wilcox-Ælfric’s prefaces: 1010) starb Ælfric im Alter von 65 Jahren. Da er im 19. Jahrhundert als einer der Förderer des angelsächsischen Schrifttums galt, wurde im Jahre 1842 ihm zu Ehren die gegründet. (de)

He is also known variously as Ælfric the Grammarian (Alfricus Grammaticus), Ælfric of Cerne, and Ælfric the Homilist. In the view of Peter Hunter Blair, he was "a man comparable both in the quantity of his writings and in the quality of his mind even with Bede himself." - Aelfric, ve staré angličtině Ælfrīc (asi 950–asi 1010) byl společně s yorským arcibiskupem Wulfstanem nejvýznamnějším prozaikem staroanglické (anglosaské) literatury z doby po Alfrédu Velikém. Aelfricovo a Wulfstanovo dílo je vyvrcholením tzv. benediktinské klášterní reformy. Nástupci Alfréda Velikého přestali totiž díky neustálým vyčerpávajícím válkám s Vikingy rozvíjet jeho osvětový odkaz. Duchovní oživení nastalo až ve 2. polovině 10. století díky vlivu benediktýnských klášterů na vzdělanost v zemi. (cs)

Hij steunde de ideeën van Dunstan betreffende de hervorming van het kloosterwezen en ontwikkelde zich tot een groot geleerde en veelzijdig prozaschrijver die vele werken schreef in het Oudengels en in het Latijn. Należy przypuszczać, że w Winchesterze odznaczył się jako uczony ponieważ w roku 987 został wysłany do opactwa w Cernel (obecnie Cerne Abbas w Dorset) aby nauczać tamtejszych mnichów.
