És la segona organització sindical internacional per antiguitat, sols superada per l'OIT. En el context de la Guerra Freda, estava considerada com una associació propera a la Unió Soviètica. Amb la caiguda del Bloc de l'est, entra en declivi i el 2006 seria sobrepassada per la Confederació Sindical Internacional. Aquell mateix any, la FSM trasllada la seua seu de Praga a Atenes. (ca)

- The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is an international federation of trade unions established in 1945. Founded in the immediate aftermath of World War Two, the organization built on the pre-war legacy of the International Federation of Trade Unions as a single structure for trade unions world-wide. With the emergence of the Cold War in the late 1940s, the WFTU splintered, with most trade unions from the Western-aligned countries leaving and creating the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in 1949. - Światowa Federacja Związków Zawodowych – ŚFZZ (ang. World Federation of Trade Unions – WFTU), (fr. Fédération Syndicale Mondiale – FSM) – międzynarodowa , założona w październiku 1945 w Paryżu. W 1949 r., na tle kontrowersji względem Planu Marshalla, wystąpiły z niej związki, które utworzyły Międzynarodową Konfederację Wolnych Związków Zawodowych. W drugiej połowie XX w. ŚFZZ była, co prawda, największą centralą związkową, jednakże zrzeszającą głównie związki afiliowane lub sympatyzujące z partiami komunistycznymi. W kontekście zimnej wojny była przedstawiana i odbierana jako radziecka organizacja frontowa.
