Walter Rolland "Rocky" Leja, GM, CD (July 1, 1921 – November 22, 1992) was born in Koniówka, Poland and later emigrated to Canada. He joined the Canadian Army (The Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers) and became a bomb disposal expert. On May 17, 1963 he successfully dismantled two bombs that had been planted in mailboxes in Westmount, Quebec by the separatist organization Front de libération du Québec (FLQ). Jean-Denis Lamoureux, a member of the FLQ who participated in the planting of the bombs, was subsequently jailed.

Une troisième bombe, trouvée dans une boîte aux lettres au coin de Lansdowne Avenue et de Westmount Avenue, a explosé alors que Leja tentait de la désarmer, lui arrachant la majeure partie de son bras gauche et lui écrasant le visage et la poitrine. Il a subi des lésions cérébrales, a perdu la capacité de parler et a été paralysé du côté droit. Le photographe André Sima était présent lors de l'explosion. Bien que les informations initiales aient révélé que les chances de survie de Leja étaient extrêmement minces, il a réussi à survivre à l'explosion. Il reçut la médaille George en janvier 1964 pour son courage remarquable et son dévouement sans pareil. He was awarded the George Medal in January 1964 for conspicuous courage and outstanding devotion to duty.
