Van Krevelen diagrams are graphical plots developed byDirk Willem van Krevelen (chemist and professor of fuel technology at the TU Delft) and used to assess the origin and maturity of kerogen and petroleum. The diagram cross-plots the hydrogen:carbon atomic ratio as a function of the oxygen:carbon atomic ratio. Beginning around 2003, the diagrams are often used to visualize data from mass spectrometry analysis, used for mixtures other than kerogen and petroleum. For example, the diagrams have been used in one analysis of the components in Scotch whiskey.

Diferentes tipos de matéria orgânica são mais propensos a produzir óleo durante a maturação termocatalítica do que outros tipos: algas, tipo 1, rico em hidrogênio, pobre em oxigênio, são propensos a fazerem bons óleos. Árvores e outros tipos de vegetação lenhosa são compostas de matéria orgânica tipo III, rico em oxigênio, pobre em hidrogênio e são fontes de carvão mineral e gás. Différentes matières organiques sont plus susceptibles que d'autres de donner du pétrole lors de la maturation géologique : les algues, riches en hydrogène, pauvres en oxygène, ont tendance à produire du bon pétrole. Les arbres et autres matériaux de type bois sont faits d'une matière plus riche en oxygène et moins en hydrogène, et donnent plutôt du charbon ou du gaz naturel. Le diagramme de Van Krevelen peut être utilisé pour différencier les différents types de kérogènes. (fr)
