| - La Resolució 1979 del Consell de Seguretat de les Nacions Unides, adoptada per unanimitat el 27 d'abril de 2011 després de reafirmar totes les resolucions anteriors del Sàhara Occidental i en particular les resolucions 1754, 1783, 1813 i 1871 i 1920, el consell va ampliar el mandat de la Missió de Nacions Unides pel Referèndum al Sàhara Occidental (MINURSO) per un any fins al 30 d'abril de 2012. La resolució no va incloure un mecanisme de seguiment dels drets humans en el mandat de la MINURSO, enmig de desacords entre diplomàtics. El Consell de Seguretat va ser criticat d'hipocresia per algunes nacions com Sud-àfrica i Nigèria, on la MINURSO seria l'única missió de pau sense un mandat de drets humans. Tanmateix, s'hi va esmentar els drets humans per primera vegada. - La resolución 1979 del Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas, aprobada por unanimidad el 27 de abril de 2011, decidió prorrogar el mandato de la Misión de Naciones Unidas para el referendo en el Sahara Occidental (MINURSO) durante un año más, hasta el 30 de abril de 2012]]. El Consejo de Seguridad se reafirmó además en las resoluciones anteriores número (2007), (2007), (2008), (2009) y 1920 (2010). La prórroga del mandato de la MINURSO se produjo tres días de que expirase el anterior. Sin embargo, a diferencia del anterior mandato, el Consejo de Seguridad, por recomendación del Secretario General, determinó que la MINURSO ya no se ocuparía de supervisar el respeto por los derechos humanos en el Sahara Occidental, pasando esa materia a ser competencia del Consejo de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas. Esa decisión de produjo en contra del deseo del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos, el cual sí consideraba idónea a la MINURSO como guardiana y supervisora del respeto por los Derechos Humanos en ese territorio. The resolution did not include a monitoring mechanism for human rights in the mandate of MINURSO, amid disagreements among diplomats. The Security Council was criticised by some nations including South Africa and Nigeria of hypocrisy–where MINURSO would be the only United Nations peacekeeping mission without a human rights mandate. However, it did mention human rights for the first time. Both Morocco and the Polisario Front welcomed the resolution; Morocco praised it for recognizing Morocco's offer of autonomy to Western Sahara, while the Polisario Front noted the increased use of human rights language in the text.
