Trương Thị Mai is a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam, holding a Bachelor of History, a Bachelor of Law, a Master of Public Administration, and an Advanced Degree in Political Theory. She has been a Member of the National Assembly of Vietnam since 1997 and was the President of the Vietnam– Cuba Friendship Association. She has been a Member of the Party Central Committee since 2006, and was the first female President of Vietnam Youth Federation.
