In taxonomy, Thermofilum is a genus of the Thermofilaceae. Thermofilum pendens is a hyperthermic member of the archael kingdom Crenarchaeota, and represents a deep branch in the order Thermoproteales. T. pendens lacks the genes for purine nucleotide biosynthesis and thus relies on environmental sources to meet its purine requirements.

Thermofilum je přísně anaerobní forma života, je chemoorganotrofní – zdrojem uhlíku i energie jsou pro ně organické látky. Energii uvolňují pomocí , je síra, která je redukována na sirovodík, dalším produktem metabolismu je oxid uhličitý. Teplotní optimum pro růst je 88 °C, roste ale do teplot 95 °C, optimální pH je 5,5.
