Des Magiers Wiederkehr gehört zu den bekanntesten Geschichten Smiths, findet sich in einigen Anthologien und diente als Vorlage für eine Folge der Fernsehserie Night Gallery. Mit dem ominösen Necronomicon enthält sie Bezüge zum Cthulhu-Mythos seines Brieffreundes H. P. Lovecraft.
