Wildes erste Märchensammlung war zugleich sein erstes Prosawerk. Die Erstausgabe enthielt Illustrationen von Walter Crane. Leid, Leiden, Mitgefühl und Selbstsucht sind die allen in der Sammlung enthaltenen Erzählungen gemeinsamen Themen.
