He was a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. He was beatified in company with thirty-three other Catholic martyrs, most of whom were natives of Tonkin, Cochin-China, or China. - Théophane ou Jean-Théophane Vénard, né le 21 novembre 1829 à Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet et mort le 2 février 1861 à Hanoï, est un prêtre des Missions étrangères de Paris. Missionnaire au Tonkin, il y est condamné à mort et exécuté. Il est par la suite déclaré bienheureux, puis saint, par l'Église catholique. Le procès en béatification de Théophane Vénard s'ouvre peu après sa mort. Il est béatifié en 1909, puis canonisé en 1988 par Jean-Paul II. Il est commémoré le 2 février selon le Martyrologe romain et le 24 novembre avec les Martyrs du Viêt-Nam. (fr)
