The tail vein or caudal vein is the largest vein in the tail of a vertebrate animal. It leads directly into the posterior cardinal vein in the posterior trunk in fishes. The mammal caudal vein (the middle caudal vein) leads to the inferior vena cava. The caudal vein is one of the many places from which a laboratory worker can withdraw blood from a mouse specimen. Warming the animal to an ideal 39°C may be necessary to cause dilation of the veins and allow for easier processing.

Bei Mäusen lässt sich die Schwanzvene durch warmes Wasser oder Wärmestrahlung leicht erweitern, so dass sie sicherer mit der Kanüle getroffen werden kann. Bei Ratten ist die Schwanzvene vergleichsweise schwierig zu erkennen. Durch die Entfernung der oberflächlich verhornten Epithelzellen des Schwanzes, beispielsweise durch Einwirkung einer gesättigten Lösung von Natriumsulfid, lässt sich die Sichtbarkeit deutlich erhöhen. Auch bei Wiederkäuern, Schildkröten, Echsen und Schlangen kann die Schwanzvene für diese Zwecke genutzt werden. (de)
